ProLife News Update 2/6

Here is a little bit of what has been going on in the pro-life world this week.
  • Susan G. Komen retracts defunding Planned Parenthood; yet things are left unclear. What's really going on? Pro-lifers are pretty unanimous on where to stand concerning Komen's announcement: learn more and take action.
  • Michelle Obama continues to strengthen ties to Planned Parenthood as she campaigns for her husband's re-election reports Steven Ertelt of Life News.
  • Planned Parenthood supports women making the right to choose sex selective abortions. Read more on Life News.
  • We must support a presidential candidate who is solid in his pro-life convictions. Read 'So, You Want to Elect a President'.
  • 40 Days for Life reports of a former abortion clinic worker who ran a 40 Days for Life campaign at her former work place and now the clinic is about to close!
  • NCHLA reports "Department of Health and Human Services reaffirmed a rule that under the new health care law, virtually all private health care plans must cover sterilization, abortifacients, and contraception." Take action now!

Prayer Request: Please pray for my cousin Suzie and her baby Gregory (in picture) as she is about to deliver this little guy.

A Civil Rights Legacy: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Dr. Martin Luther King

Guest blog by 16 year old Maddie Lopez
It was the beginning of the second semester, and we all had just gotten back from Christmas break. I sat there in my fourth period class – U.S. History. It was the worst class to have in the middle of the day, especially with the teacher I ended up with. It was hard to focus because my brain was still in “break mode”, and it keeps wandering from one random topic to the next.

Suddenly, breaking my spontaneous train of thought, my teacher announced that we would be continuing the section on the Civil Rights Movement. I had never been truly interested much in the distant occurrences from hundreds and hundreds of years ago, but Civil Rights was recent, within the past century. He had my full attention.

The movie commenced, and my attention was grasped instantly. The whole time I was paralleling it with modern day injustices, and it made the movie much more interesting. The footage being shown on the screen was astounding, and it was extremely difficult to believe what I was seeing. It was weird – I couldn’t think of a time that I had ever voluntarily wanted to learn anything in my history class before.

The images flashed by, as we all watched Martin Luther King Jr campaign for nonviolent tactics in achieving equal rights for those within the black community. I observed as justice became a mere word in the vocabulary of a society that refused to protect the most basic rights of its own citizens. I was torn apart as I watched helplessly as stubborn governors would not allow peaceful marches to take place, as brutal policemen unleashed their dogs on black citizens, and as merciless firemen aimed high-pressure fire hoses at harmless protesters.

I could not look away, even though my heart was crying out for someone to make it all stop. I felt the beat of my heart pounding inside my chest, something I thought only happened to characters in dramatically written novels. You may ask me, why is it that big of a deal? The black community got their equal rights, and it’s not like it is happening anymore… right? Well yes, that is true. However, my heart is broken over a different injustice.

My heart is broken over another injustice, a violent encroachment on the rights of our unborn children, here in America and throughout the world. Each day, more than 3,000 children are barbarically ripped or burned from the comfort of their mother’s nurturing womb, and thrown in the trash. The most precious of all gifts is being treated like worthless garbage. And to be honest, I am fed up. I remember my teacher said something that really struck me. It was along the lines of, "Well, this was not even that long ago. Aren't you glad that this is not happening in our world today?" I couldn't help but disagree. The inconsistencies that have popped up in classroom conversations never cease to amaze me.

While watching the Civil Rights activists lobby for their basic, inalienable rights, I paralleled it with the work the pro-life movement has been doing. I asked the same questions: how could anyone do this? How can they be so ignorant of what they are inflicting upon these people? The abolition of slavery was inevitable, as was the end of segregation. We look at the segregation of whites and blacks as something so strange, and so obviously wrong. One day, will this also be true of abortion? When will our culture open its eyes?

Sitting there, I felt an anger swell up inside of me, ripping me to pieces. However, that anger that I feel over this is not uncontrollable, but a righteous anger, a deep unquenchable fire, converted into an undeniable passion to bring about a change in what our culture accepts as “normal”. The anger I feel is a rage against injustice, just as Jesus was righteously angry with the merchants who had turned the temple, into a marketplace. They had disrespected a place of worship, and cheapened the value of a place that deserved that utmost respect.

I left class that day with a renewed passion. I know that the abortion industry is bent on destroying the life of the most innocent and vulnerable among us, violating the dignity of all people. I learned, as Dr. King put it, that “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” The brutal act of abortion, this plague upon our society, has claimed 50 million lives too many, and I call upon anyone and everyone to take a stand for your unborn brothers and sisters. If not for them, then do it for the women who are exploited, because in a time of need, they felt abandoned and alone.

Pope Benedict XVI once wrote, “Each of us has a mission, each of us is called to change the world, to work for a culture forged by love and respect for the dignity of each human person.” Do not be afraid to put yourself out there, to go do something to help stop the atrocity of abortion. You may feel you are too young, too quiet, too old, too weak, too shy or even too short, but God does not care! He calls the weak and the unequipped, so that He can make them strong, and so that He can prepare them for the battle.

Do not let your heart be hardened, but let your heart break over the pain caused to the families of this nation. Keep that desire, and hold on to that passion, because it is not the dry information or statistics that will change the hearts of the people (although I will not overlook it as a potential possibility), but it is your love and compassion for them. The great part is, you are capable of love and compassion; therefore you can change hearts, and that is what makes all the difference. Christ is waiting for you to answer the call. What are you waiting for?

For Life,

Maddie

A Beautiful Quote

I'm in the middle of finals this week, so I probably will not be posting this week. However, this is a beautiful quote that I have to share:
"Every year, there are literally millions of children silently crying out and begging for somebody to help them, somebody to give them mercy. And we have to decide if that somebody is going to be us, or if we're going to just ignore their cries. Because even when you can't hear them it doesn't mean they're not there. I cannot stand before God when I die, look Him in the eye, and say to Him that I was too busy to do this or it just wasn't my thing."

Love Your Body Day

Have you heard, it’s love your body day!? I challenge you to read this blog, leave a comment as to why you love your body, then re-post a link to this article. If you Tweet, the hash-tag is #lybd.

A little bit about today from pro-abortion organization, National Organization for Women’s (NOW), press release:
“The National Organization for Women Foundation announces its 14th annual Love Your Body Day to take place on Wednesday, Oct. 19. NOW Foundation launched the groundbreaking Love Your Body Day in 1998 to promote positive images of women and girls in the media and offer an alternative to unrealistic and harmful standards of beauty. Body image remains a relevant issue affecting women's health and well-being, with broader implications for the status of women in society. “
While NOW supports abortion, and that clearly isn’t loving you body, that’s not what this blog is about, but it certainly fits in without having to be explained . . . If you love something or someone you usually respect them, right? You respect their wishes, opinion, health, happiness, and so much more; well, a selfless love does, right? Lets look at this day instead of ‘Love Your Body Day’ as ‘Respect Your Body Day’. Really it’s one in the same.

Over the last few days I asked my Facebook** and Twitter** friends why they love their bodies and here are just a few of the beautiful responses I received:

Margaret Morris I love my body because who I am on the inside is represented by who I am on the outside and visa-versa.
Ashley Marie Colantuono I respect my body because God designed me in His image, I embody his love, grace, beauty, and passion. I am beautiful before God, therefore I don't need the empty promises of one night stands, starving myself to meet the social norms or disrespecting Him with how and who I love. Psalm 31 woman, that's who I aspire to be.
Jennifer Burton Brannon It has brought forth and sustained two beautiful lives!

littlebytesnews @Timmerie I respect my body bc w/o respect 4ourselves who else will respect us?We must learn self respect @ an early age bc our bodies chnge.

If you love your body, you treasure it and its beauty. Women, your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit and you and all your friends should love your bodies by respecting them with all you do and say. In Gal 5:22 “chastity” is listed as a fruit of the Holy Spirit. If we guard our bodies with chastity we respect our fidelity and the bodies of others. We also won’t be taken down roads that lead to broken hearts because of, promiscuity, contraception and abortion.
“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been purchased at a price. Therefore, glorify God in your body.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
We can also love our bodies by respecting the beauty and inherent dignity of every other person. Don’t fall prey to the stereo typical idea of Hollywood where we criticize every ‘flaw’ or ‘imperfection’ on ourselves and others. So what if her nose is different in shape or size from yours. God created man in His image and likeness (Gen 1:26). Yes, some are better looking than others; but, must we point it out?

I too can fall into commenting on other people’s physical appearance especially when it’s so commonly done. However, is this the loving thing to do when society and media already tear people down from the hair on their head to the nail polish on their toes?

Last week when I was helping with my Church’s middle school youth group, two of the 8th grade girls shared with me about how they’re made fun of at school, and even by their friends. One girl said she was called a pelican, among other things, for having a big nose. The second girl who has beautiful curly hair was called muffin top because of her curly hair. These girls cried that day at school, at home, and then to me. They’ve been made fun of for these things all their lives. When is it going to stop? This pain just breaks my heart because these girls think that they’re not good enough and need to change because of the comments made.

We do the same thing every day to others. I think it’s time we rise up against gossip, society, magazines, and say, "I, along with you, am made by God and we are beautiful in our own ways. Beauty is more than what is on the outside. Don’t allow your words to bring people down; whether it's to their faces or behind their backs. Love your body by loving your piers’ bodies as well.

Challenge: Let’s be extraordinary and rise above the critiques of our bodies.

Re-post this article and share a comment of why you love your body! If you Tweet be sure to us the hash-tag #lybd.

“I praise you, because I am wonderfully made; wonderful are your works! My very self you know.“ Psalm 139:14

TAKE ACTION: Call to De-Fund Planned Parenthood

Pro-life organizations across the country, are pushing a grassroots effort to de-fund Planned Parenthood of their more than $363 million in annual funding with our tax dollars!

Beginning today until March 25, 2011 we are flooding congressional members with phone calls at their district offices.  All it takes is one voice of concern to change a mind, but we can reach our Unites States leaders with far more phone calls than that and ultimately de-fund Planned Parenthood!

See below for an update of what has happened thus far in the fight to de-fund Planned Parenthood.

We can make a difference!

Here is what YOU need to do:

1.  Call your House and Senate officials at their district office and tell them you stand with millions of Americans across the country in asking them to de-fund Planned Parenthood in the continuing resolution budget.  Find your representative here.

2.  Forward this email and post on social networking sites multiple times throughout the week.

3.  Don’t stop after one call.  Continue calling and spreading the word!

Update:

A temporary budget was passed to give our Unites States leaders more time to settle on a new budget that will consist of serious budget cuts.  This temporary, three-week budget did not de-fund Planned Parenthood, but this isn’t the end.  When our officials come back together in the coming weeks they will pass a new budget.  We MUST tell our elected officials to cut all federal funding of Planned Parenthood through Title X because Planned Parenthood has illegally aided the sex-trafficking of girls as young as 14, covered up rape and statutory rape of young girls, and much more which you can learn about from these links:

Surrounded By Abortion Day to Day

Abortion is hardly a speck on most people’s radar. It’s no big deal and not my business, right?   But abortion is constantly surrounding us in our every day life: through our conversations, where we are at a given moment, and who we are with.  So here is an example of two consecutive days where my life was surrounded by abortion that was outside of my work and blog.

Sunday night I sat in the car with my mom on our way to El Torito for dinner when I looked to my right and saw Family Planning Associates (FPA) abortion clinic. As we drove by I thought about times when I’ve sidewalk counseled there and once saw a police officer bring an inmate from the local jail to the clinic for an abortion.

As we continued down this beautiful street with pretty green trees covered in lights, I commented to my mom about how sad it is to be so close in proximity to where we live our daily lives and there’s an abortion clinic right next to us. Just a block down the way from FPA my mom mentioned that there’s a Planned Parenthood on the corner next door to a strip club, and she recalled a time when she prayed outside of that Planned Parenthood with Father Pavone when one of my siblings was just a baby in a pack on her back...  Moments later we pulled up to El Torito and walked in to have dinner.

As I looked at this beautiful little area that was masked by pretty trees, clean cut buildings, and bright lights I felt uncomfortable knowing what takes place in those buildings within eye site. I could have sat there during my entire dinner heartbroken just thinking about it all, but if I did what good would that have done?

Southern California Surrounded by abortion clinics.

The next morning I was hurrying to finish some work before going to Disneyland with my family when it was brought to my attention that a friend on Facebook had checked in at Planned Parenthood and said “accidents happen”.   I was so angry but continued to read the comment where people said things like “You’re not keeping it!” or called the baby “cheese”.   Oh, I was so upset I didn’t know if I should scream or cry.   After a moment I understood it was a joke.   For the next couple hours I was highly disturbed by the “joke” and recalled all those times over the years when I would walk up on a group of friends who quickly quieted when spotting me.   Later when I inquired I’m told someone made an abortion joke and didn't want to offend me ‘cause I’m pro-life'.

Hours later I was in the car on my way to Disneyland and heard a song called Lucy by SKILLET and some of the main words of the song were "hey Lucy I remember your name".  When the song ended the radio host said the song was about a young man and his girlfriend in high school who got pregnant and made a choice to abort.  In the song the vocalist sings about how he would do things differently if he had the chance.   My heart ached for this couple and their regret in the name of ‘choice’.   Moments later I looked to my left and there was a Planned Parenthood clinic off the freeway where in 2009, within ten days of each other, two women were taken from the clinic by ambulance after an abortion.

Abortion surrounds our every day life whether we know it or not. There are abortions within our own families that we are surprised to find out about or will never know of, friends you never thought would have abortions. All of us are missing people from our lives in the name of ‘choice’.

Now I ask you, what kind of impact does abortion have on you and your every day life?

Supporting Pro-Life Legislation, Even With Exceptions

Last night, Facebook posts by pro-life advocates brought attention to Abby Johnson’s supports of a bill that would require a sonogram be performed and the doctor to explain it at least 24 hours before the abortion, except in cases of rape, incest, and abnormal development of the fetus (Greek for young one) the mother has the choice not to be told about the sonogram by the doctor or to see it.

Abby tells people not to get into a “tizzy” because there is an exception to the bill. She states that these exceptions are only 1% of all abortions performed, and that thousands of lives will still be saved if this bill passes. Abby says, “We win some battles before winning the war.”

Some pro-lifers are angered by Abby’s response to this exception, but I agree with her, the fight for the life of un-born will not be won in one stroke. My mom very eloquently explained on Facebook why it is important to move forward with imperfect pro-life legislation and that Abby is correct in supporting this bill even with the exceptions. See my mom’s response:

Louisa Millington
Although human law may not always express the moral imperative, which is protection of all human life in all of its stages, we must always work to change our laws, which have an obligation to protect and preserve all human life. With that being said, Pope John Paul II in The Gospel of Life tells us that we may support imperfect legislation, legislation, for example, that does not ban all abortions, but puts some control on the current more permissive laws by aiming to lower the number of abortions. We must attempt , however imperfectly, to incrementally reverse the massive tide of abortion through imperfect legislation. "This does not in fact represent an illicit cooperation with an unjust law, but rather a legitimate and proper attempt to limit its evil aspects." Gospel of Life, no. 73

The same principals apply to imperfect politicians. If we wait for electable candidates that perfectly conform to our pro-life position, we will likely be continuously disappointed with representation supporting the platform of the Culture of Death.

The last thing I would say on this topic is that the abortion industry did not become this million plus, baby killing machine over night, and short of the hand of God intervening on our behalf, the rolling back of abortion rights will also not happen over night with one individual piece of legislation. It will likely happen one imperfect law at a time.
