Saint Joseph a Father

Below are pieces of a blog I wrote last year after Father’s Day where I reflected on Saint Joseph as a father in comparison to modern day fathers. As today we celebrate the life of Saint Joseph, the patron saint of families, I encourage you to read and share what a beautiful life Saint Joseph led and how we can imitate the love he showed for his family in our own lives.
Sunday I celebrated Fathers Day with my parents, siblings, cousins, and grandparents. We had a barbecue and spent the day outside with all the little cousins running around eating up the attention. Earlier that morning I sat in Mass and looked at the statue of Saint Joseph behind the choir and reflected on Saint Joseph as protector of the Holy Family (Virgin Mary and Jesus). Saint Joseph’s betrothed wife was pregnant by the power of the Holy Spirit, and despite any doubt, or the embarrassment of Mary being thought of as unfaithful, Saint Joseph accepted his duty as the foster father of Jesus. Even through hard times, when the Holy Family had to flee to Egypt, Saint Joseph protected his family.

As I continued to think through this I thought of the many unborn children who were aborted because of the father’s apathy or his pressuring of the mother of his child to abort. There is a big social difference between today and the time of Jesus, and it broke my heart that morning to think of all the fathers who were not celebrating Father’s Day because of their apathy; an apathy that was not known to Saint Joseph.
This has continued to be on my mind this week. . . While I was working on a "Call to Action" piece for young people to be involved in pro-life work, I asked a friend of mine what she would say to encourage others be be involved in pro-life ministry. Here is what she sent me:
“I encourage men to stand up for the women in their life, and recognize that they are needed more than ever in these decisions. There are better choices and better options (than abortion), and the baby is theirs too. Men have a say in this choice. Many women would not have aborted their children if they knew they had the father’s support. I call upon men in society to be bold, and to stand up for life!” ~ Maddie Lopez Age 16 ~
Like me, Maddie is a young woman who has sidewalk counseled many times before, and we often see women at the abortion clinic who share that they are aborting because their boyfriend wasn’t excited or didn’t care when they said they were pregnant. Sometimes the boyfriend even insists on abortion.
Similar to Maddie, I encourage men to be protectors of their children both inside and outside of the womb. The child’s environment shouldn't be the influence that determines how your child will be cared for. Think again to the example of St. Joseph, he embraced the opportunity to be a father to the baby of a child that was not even his own. St. Joseph can be thought of as one of the greatest of men because he said, "yes", and in doing so raised the Greatest Man of all time, Jesus. I hope more men look to Saint Joseph as a role-model.

“O St. Joseph, foster father of Jesus Christ and true spouse of the Virgin Mary, pray for us and for the suffering and dying of this day/night.”

Happy Feast Day of Saint Joseph!

International Women's Day - Values

Today is International Women's Day! I ask myself what that means exactly? On the news this morning it was spoken of as a day to recognize the empowerment of women as a fundamental human right. I completely agree! I see this day as a day to recognize the fundamental human right to life of women both born and unborn and how women today should have values along with their "empowerment".

Well, one woman who is quite popular today is Karen Santorum. Last night I watched a short interview of her by CBS news. I encourage you to look at this woman as a wonderful role model. She admits when she was younger she made mistakes, she has a fantastic education and career, she serves her family and husband first and foremost, she follows God's call for her family, and she is unquestionably pro-life.

Please watch this inspiring interview by CBS of Karen Santorum on International Women's Day:

Are we giving women in the womb a chance to live as well? Are women who live today standing for this fundamental right to life?

Hey Guys,

For those of you who don't already know, I 100% back Rick Santorum for president. I truly hope you will to. He is already winning and it's because people love him for his politics, character, and beliefs. Truly this man will be elected by the people, and you can make that happen. I ask you to please read the most recent email below from his campaign and support him in any way possible.

Praying and Working for Santorum for President!

We tied Mitt Romney in Michigan last night! Forget about what the press is saying—you read that correctly. We tied Mitt Romney in his home state. But we’ve got to keep the momentum going. Will you help us?

Michigan awards their delegates by Congressional District. So while Romney narrowly won the statewide popular vote, we won the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th, 7th and 13th districts, and one more district, the 5th, is within a 100 votes and there might be a recount. Gov. Romney and I will each get one of Michigan's two at large delegates, giving us a split of 15-15.

Here's the bottom line: Mitt Romney and his SuperPAC outspent us by millions of dollars in his home state, and he couldn't come away with anything better than a tie in the delegate count. No matter what the press would have you believe this morning, we are now in for a long, important battle. But before I get to that, I just have to tell you, I thought a lot about my grandfather last night.
He was an immigrant from Italy. He became a coal miner, and worked hard every day. To think that his grandson could run in the most important Presidential election in American history is absolutely inspiring!
I thought of him a lot during the early days of this campaign when I was spending long nights crisscrossing Iowa to talk with voters, driving in my own car while other candidates were taking private jets. It's hard to be the underdog! Let me tell you, it's much more difficult to run a grassroots, shoe-leather campaign where you actually talk to voters, than to throw millions of dollars on TV.
But now, with 10 states voting in the next week, we need those millions. Will you help us?
It has been humbling to see how this story has resonated with Americans across the country. The idea that hard work and dedication can pay off, no matter who you are or where you come from, well, that's the American dream isn't it?
Our campaign proved again last night that Republican voters want a work horse to take on President Obama. They see that in our campaign.
Now, we move on to Super Tuesday. In only 6 days, 10 states will vote. That means we have to raise a lot of money to compete with the millions Romney and his backers are dumping into this race. I hope you will add your $35 and help us fight back.
I am putting together a campaign of regular Americans who understand that now is the time to save America. These are Americans with the courage to fight the liberal left – not with moderate mushiness, but with bold ideas.
Will you join the millions of Americans who are rallying to our campaign and donate today?

We just tied Romney in Michigan, but we can't let up. Now is the time. Let's do what Americans always do when faced with an impossible challenge – we fight.

It won't be easy. But it's worth it.
For America,
Rick
Senator Rick Santorum

P.S. We won an amazing victory last night in Mitt Romney's home state of Michigan. We can win this thing. But we need to raise more money for Super Tuesday to make it happen. Will you join us?

Action: Defend Religious Liberty

Take action today to defend religious liberty and stop abortion pills and contraception from being covered through mandated insurance policies with no copay. We will not allow religious liberties to violated by giving free birth control and abortion pills!

Read my original blog, if you haven't already, giving more detail on the issue. It's very important we are all educated on the issue at hand: 'Religious Freedom and America Consciences'

Take Action:

  1. Sign the Petition by ACLJ to Reverse President Obama's Forced Abortion Pill Coverage for Religious Institutions
  2. Pass this on for others to read and take action
  3. Pray

Religious Freedom and America Consciences

Challenge to every American Citizens Conscience . . . YOU need to know!

On January 20, 2012 Kathleen Sebelius, secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), instituted a ruling requiring every insurance policy to cover the costs of contraception, abortion inducing drugs, and sterilization. If the ruling is not reversed, it will go into effect late this summer!

This will require religious institutions, with only a small exception for churches, against their moral and ethical beliefs, to provide insurance plans paying for these services. American citizens will be paying for these services through their insurance, and they will have NO choice.

Please watch the below video by Bishop Slattery of the diocese of Tulsa, OK where he explains the appalling threat to not only every Americana's conscience but to religious freedoms:

A few things I would like to emphasize from Bishop Slattery’s statement:

  • As an American you have a a fundamental right to Religious Liberty
  • This is a violation of your First Amendment Right of Religious Liberty
  • Businesses and institutions will be forced to provide this insurance
  • These services are intrinsically evil
  • The Catholic Church has always complied with the law, however, this is a law we cannot and will not comply with
  • The right to free exercise of religion ranks first in the bill of rights

Bishops and Cardinals across the United States have joined together in guiding the Catholic Church in a firm position that opposes this mandate, which violates your right to Religious liberty by requiring all institutions and people of faith to violate their consciences by requiring them to provide and pay for abortion inducing drugs, contraception, and sterilization.

It is not possible for me to stress how important it is for every person to be aware of what is happening and what is at stake here. This decision will not be reversed if you do not become informed and vehemently stand against it. We will lose the most important of liberties if you are silent. Catholic, Evangelical, and secular alike should agree that this is a blatant violation of the rights of the American people.

Take Action:

  1. Send a pre-written email to congress: http://www.nchla.org/actiondisplay.asp?ID=292
  2. Educate yourself and others on the issue by sharing this article
  3. Pray
  4. Don’t stop praying or taking action

So tell me, why are you against this HHS mandate?

Revolution

We are fast approaching 40 years of Nationalized Abortion, as this Sunday, January 22, marks the 39th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton, Supreme Court decisions, which respectively repealed any state restrictions of abortion and granted women the right to abortion through their entire 9 months of pregnancy. In that time over 50,000,000 young lives have been snuffed out. The majority of those lives were ended not because the mother’s life was in danger or because the mother had been the victim of rape or incest (not that either of those reasons justify the killing of innocent human life). 49,500,000 of those lives were either burned or hacked to death because their existence was not convenient. In 1973 there was a revolution to claim control of women’s bodies, of women’s destinies, and there was no lie too large or sacrifice too small in order to secure a woman’s right to destroy the unborn child in her womb.

When something is repeated often enough it becomes a social norm. In 1973 the mass statistic that 5,000-10,000 women died annually due to unsafe and illegal abortions, had long been held true. This number was so a part of the revolution’s mantra that Dr. Bernard Nathanson, formerly of the National Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws (NARAL), in order to advance the revolution, testified before the Supreme Court, as an expert witness, that indeed between 5,000-10,000 lives were lost annually to illegal abortions. However, the reality was that in 1972, and Dr. Nathanson knew it as he perjured himself before the Supreme Court, 39 women had died from illegal abortions across the United States. Dr. Nathanson would later come to see that his participation in the abortion revolution had been a great error in judgement, and he would spend the rest of his life in reparation for the debt that he said he would never be able to fully repay. (Thank God for Jesus).

In these almost 40 years of legalized abortion, has the world become a better place? Have the lives of women improved? Over these 40 years (roughly my age, but please don’t tell my children) I have witnessed a downward spiral of the respect for all human life in all of its conditions. When the Supreme Court made it possible for women and men to objectify their unborn children, it opened a flood gate of utilitarian behavior. Now, more than ever, people are valued for their usefulness and productivity, and disregarded and diminished if they are not capable of such positive output. Our social fabric/marriages have been devastated by families that kill their own, and by cheating spouses that take care of dirty little accidents. Women and children are living in poverty by the millions because so many no longer think it necessary to love and care for their neighbor; because if you don’t have to care for the child in your womb, who do you have to care for? I’ve witnessed elementary aged children robbed of their childhood, wearing bracelets indicating sexual favors for the asking.

What does all of this have to do with the abortion revolution? It is a revolution based on the devaluing of human life, and when the millions of people that have been born since 1973 know that they were nothing but a choice, something to be discarded if they were not valuable enough to their landlord, than what value do you think those millions of people place on each other and on themselves? America has recently suffered a financial downgrade which effects how the world perceives us, and how they value our financial relationships. Well, America’s abortion revolution has devalued each and every one of its most precious resources, it’s citizenry, by downgrading post-1973 Americans to choices. As a result we all tend to look at each other as choices. I will love you, I will help you, I will feed you, I will clothe you if you are a worthwhile choice. We must not be surprised when we hear of murders, killings, of wars, or of hatred...If a mother can kill her own child, what is left but for us to kill each other? - Mother Teresa

While we may or may not be able to overturn Roe and while we may or may not ever see a Human Life Amendment, we can choose life. We can affirm life in all of its stages. We can love and respect our neighbor, no matter their situation in life. I live my life in service to God and the unborn, and that includes working to affirm life politically, spiritually, and socially. However, I know that it is most important that the revolution I seek be a revolution of the soul. There would be no more abortion or devaluing of human life if we all made individual choices to love our neighbors (including those in the womb).

A Revolution for Life begins with me and begins with you. Live a life in service and love of others. Never let it be said that, “I had an abortion because I didn’t have a choice.” Be a loving resource for your fellow man... begin a revoution!

Roe v Wade Events

"Will we march only to the music of time, or will we, risking criticism and abuse, march to the soul-saving music of eternity?"
~ Martin Luther King, Jr., Strength to Love, 1963 ~

It's hard to believe that January 22nd marks the 39th anniversary of a supreme court decision that changed our country forever. This decision made it a private right to legally kill your unborn child in the womb through all nine months of a woman's pregnancy. Roe v Wade = 55,000,000 children dead today. 55,000,000 who never took their first breath and whose children we will never meet. That number does not even include chemical abortions which are extremely common; nor does it include the many abortions that aren't required to be reported in various states.

In six days our country will mourn the loss of these children, pray for those who have been affected by abortion, and pray for an end to abortion. We will walk in prayerful solidarity for the lives that are missing. Many will never know an aunt, uncle, brother, sister, cousin, or perhaps best friend. What are you going to do to mourn this great loss and tell the world this is enough and you are pro-life? 1/3 of my generation has been aborted and I must say enough is enough!

Inside Out

Black vs White

With horror we read in the Old Testament of the Bible about different periods in time where live children were killed under the rule of Pharaohs, kings, and various dictators. We look upon the people of ancient history with disgust for their audacious actions in mandating any form of killing innocent children.

Killing of him wrong?
Moses was placed in a basket and set into the river for an Egyptian woman to find, so that he would not fall prey to Pharaohs orders, “Every son that is born to the Hebrews you shall cast into the Nile, but you shall let every daughter live." (Ex 1:22) Think of all that Moses did (led the enslaved Israelites out of Egypt, led them to the promised land, brought them the ten commandments from God, and more). Now imagine if Moses was tossed into the Nile river like all the other Hebrew baby boys.

In Matthew 2 we read of Jesus’ birth and how in an effort to kill baby Jesus, because Herod knew He was the messiah and felt threatened by Him, Herod ordered all male children in Bethlehem and in the region to be killed. Which would be why the Holy Family fled to Egypt following Jesus’ birth. After realizing what the loss from the death of baby Moses would have been, what would have happened if baby Jesus was killed with all the other male boys?

Killing of him okay?
My Cousin Suzie's Baby Gregory
Moses helped guide the Israelite people back to God. Jesus atoned for the sins of the world so that we can gain eternal life with Him in heaven. This all would have never happened if these great men were killed as babies. We look with disgust on history for barbaric men seeking to kill babies and children. However today, we look at the killing of these children in the womb as something that is a choice, necessary, common and a right. Our culture’s reasons for killing the unborn in the womb are no different than the sinful reasons of old: greed, power, vanity, pride, etc. The only difference between the slaughtering of old and abortion today is the latter is done inside the womb for NO ONE to see how horrific it really is.

Inside of the womb or outside of the womb, these children are being killed throughout history. As a young person, will you speak the truth and stand against the slaughter of children in the womb the same way you look with disgust on the killing of the Hebrew children in Egypt in the Old and New Testaments?

Challenge your thinking and the thoughts of others to see the truth. So is it difficult to label abortion as a moral wrong, or is the issue of abortion black and white?

Give 40 Days to Save a Life

Would you say yes to doing something if you knew it would save a life?

Nearly two years ago to the day, at a Mass marking the anniversary of the Supreme Court decision of Roe v Wade, I was asked to run a 40 Days for Life campaign for the fall of 2010. I was 17 years old, actively pro-life and had recently moved to San Diego to attend John Paul the Great Catholic University. I was introduced to a gentleman named Gene minutes prior, and right away I was asked if I would head up a 40 Days for Life campaign that would consist of a 40 day long prayerful presence outside of the busiest abortion clinic in all of San Diego. I prayed about it and told Gene, “yes” thinking that it couldn't be too hard, but more importantly knowing I needed to do something.

Some of the San Diego Campaign Leaders
Gene, Shawn (National 40DFL), Timmerie, Elena
Fast forward about 6 months. I had to leave school in San Diego and move back home. It was one of those unexpected experiences where I had to trust that it was part of God’s plan for me. Well, within a couple weeks of returning home I received a call from Gene, it was time to sign up for the fall 40 Days for Life campaign. I then lived over two hours away from the location, but I knew that it needed to be done. Lives were being lost by the dozens in that abortion clinic every week. I knew because I would spend every Saturday morning praying outside of that abortion clinic off of Miramar Road. I wept as one after another, women walked in to allow the lives of their innocent babies to be ended.

To make this long story very short, I ran a 40 Days for Life campaign from 2+ hours away using my cell phone and a laptop computer. I prayed, called, emailed, prayed some more, and kept moving forward. I drove back and forth to San Diego for the cast the vision meetings, kick off event, midway rally, and a closing celebration. While it was difficult at times and extremely exhausting as I sat in front of my computer and on the phone throughout the campaign coordinating for the constant presence of as least two people outside of the abortion clinic praying, my life was blessed.

Not only were 10 lives saved during those 40 days but hundreds of people of different religious backgrounds in the community came together with a common goal -- to pray for an end to abortion. Hundreds of men, women, and children prayed in front of an abortion clinic for the very first time, and many of those people now pray in front of the abortion clinic and sidewalk counsel regularly.

10 lives were saved, 10 families will not morn the loss of an innocent child, hundreds of people like you and me will continue to pray for an end to abortion, and a community stands together in faith.

To see this happen in a community and be apart of it was an honor and a blessing. When it wasn’t easy or I was exhausted I would pray and let the Lord guide the campaign because it was his work and I was just His instrument. The people who gave their time in prayer and assisted and supported me in making the campaign happen are heroes for the unborn. They said yes to God’s call to protect the most innocent and helpless in our society -- the unborn.

I share my experience with you because I want you to know that there was nothing special about me running that campaign, all I did was say yes and prayerfully allow the Lord to guide me. This being said, I ask you to please consider running a 40 Days for Life campaign during lent from February 22 - April 1. You cannot do it alone but with God anything is possible!

Last week I moved back to San Diego and am going to school again. Tomorrow January 10th is the deadline to sign up for a 40 Days for Life Campaign. I may not be able to run this campaign while working and attending school, but I am going to make sure that it happens and find a team to do so. Last night, I spoke with Trippy, the lady who ran the fall 2011 40 Days for Life campaign at my same location, and Trippy said to me “That FPA (Family Planning Associates) is close to closing!” This abortion clinic went from being the busiest San Diego abortion clinic in the fall of 2010 with women and teens coming all the way from Mexico to today being closed on random days with business significantly reduced. This is because of the power of prayer and a community that is giving their time to pray and sidewalk counsel for each baby’s life that is at risk of being lost. I plan to amp things up even more as we go into this spring campaign because we are shutting down that abortion clinic!

Will you say yes to doing something to save a life?

Your age and your background does not matter. If I could do it at 17 from two hours away, ANYONE CAN DO IT!

Sign up to run a 40 Days for Life Campaign this spring! Assist those who may already be running a campaign at your chosen location!

What have 40 Days for Life Campaigns done across the world?

  • 5,045 babies now alive that would have otherwise been aborted
  • 61 abortion workers have left their jobs and the abortion industry
  • 19 abortion clinics have shut down completely

These are just what the numbers we know of!

Pope John Paul II -- Advent & Christmas

Pope John Paul II in his address on Dec. 18, 2002 said:
"The liturgy of Advent…helps us to understand fully the value and meaning of the mystery of Christmas. It is not just about commemorating the historical event, which occurred some 2,000 years ago in a little village of Judea. Instead, it is necessary to understand that the whole of our life must be an ‘advent,’ a vigilant awaiting of the final coming of Christ. To predispose our mind to welcome the Lord who, as we say in the Creed, one day will come to judge the living and the dead, we must learn to recognize him as present in the events of daily life. Therefore, Advent is, so to speak, an intense training that directs us decisively toward him who already came, who will come, and who comes continuously."

Merry Christmas to you and Yours!

TWEET THAT! Score #10forTebow

This season NFL quarterback Tim Tebow has been racking up scores of points for the Broncos. While this is very exciting for him and all his fans, pro-abortion proponents have turned it into something rather unfavorable . . .

Since Tim Tebow is outspokenly pro-life and has the power to reach millions of people; abortion supporters are not too happy. Pro-abortion advocates have started a campaign that encourages $10 to be donated to any pro-abortion organization for every touchdown Tebow makes. I find this wicked and frustrating, espeically because the campaign has gotten quite a bit of traction. Those who support the taking of innocent lives may be getting a kick out of this campaign, but little to they realize that the pro-life movement will not sit by idly while it happens.

Pro-life blogger Jill Stanek has provided us with an opportunity to counter the negative attack and have a positive impact:

So, pro-lifers unite! Let’s take over the #10forTebow hashtag – beginning today! Use that hashtag for all your tweets. And watch the Broncos/Patriots tomorrow, December 18, at 4:15p EST and note your $10 donation at #10forTebow!

Even if you're not able to donate $10 for each of Tebow's touchdowns you can help create some buzz on Facebook and Twitter by sharing this blog and by using the #10forTebow hashtag.

A Beautiful Quote

I'm in the middle of finals this week, so I probably will not be posting this week. However, this is a beautiful quote that I have to share:
"Every year, there are literally millions of children silently crying out and begging for somebody to help them, somebody to give them mercy. And we have to decide if that somebody is going to be us, or if we're going to just ignore their cries. Because even when you can't hear them it doesn't mean they're not there. I cannot stand before God when I die, look Him in the eye, and say to Him that I was too busy to do this or it just wasn't my thing."

Profits from Popular Christmas Flowers Pay for Abortions

Planned Parenthood is once again raking in the money from everyday people, even during the Christmas season. The festive poinsettia plants that are used to decorate churches and homes over the Christmas season are helping to fund Planned Parenthood.

Paul Ecke Ranch, the world's largest distributor of poinsettias, is a large benefactor of Planned Parenthood. For years Paul Ecke's family has been recognized as one of the largest abortion supporters in San Diego.

This Christmas season I ask you to please purchase your poinsettia plants with caution this year, by checking if the poinsettia came from Ecke's Ranch. Every time I see a poinsettia plant I check the tag to see whether or not they're from Ecke's Ranch.

If you know of anywhere that sells Eche's Ranch poinsettias let me know and I'll post a list.

Newt Tells CatholicVote: “Human life begins at conception.”

Last week GOP candidate Newt Gingrich made a comment to ABC news saying life begins at implantation. Over the weekend Newt Gingrich released the following statement affirming that life begins at conception and that he will do everything in his power to promote the dignity of human life. In addition, Gingrich's campaign team contacted Catholic Vote directly to assure them of Gingrich's pro-life stance. Here is the statement which is also published on Gingrich's campaign website:

Gingrich Reaffirms His Belief in the Sanctity of all Human Life, Born and Unborn

Atlanta, GA - Newt 2012 released the following statement today from Newt Gingrich regarding his belief in the sanctity of all human life, born and unborn.

"As I have stated many times throughout the course of my public life, I believe that human life begins at conception. I believe that every unborn life is precious, no matter how conceived. I also believe that we should work for the day when there will be no abortions for any reason, and that every unborn child will be welcomed into life and protected by law.

That is why I have supported, and will continue to support, pro-life legislation that not only limits, but also reduces, the total number of abortions, with a view to the eventual legal protection of all unborn human life.

As I have also stated in the past, on day one of my administration, I will sign an executive order reinstating Ronald Reagan’s Mexico City policy that prevents taxpayer dollars from being used to fund abortions overseas. I will also work with Congress to repeal Obamacare, defund Planned Parenthood so that no taxpayer dollars are being used to fund abortions but rather transfer the money so it is used to promote adoption and other pro-family policies, and to enact legislation that provides greater protections for the unborn.

In terms of new pro-life legislation, I stated as recently as November 19 at a public forum of candidates in Iowa that I support Congress enacting pro-life legislation under the 14th Amendment, including legislation that would define personhood as beginning at conception.

As I have also made clear in several of my public pronouncements throughout this campaign, I oppose federal funding of any research that destroys a human embryo because we are also dealing here with human life.

My convictions on human life are longstanding, deeply felt, and irrevocable matters of conscience. I will do all in my power – always – to foster reverence for life."
I fully trust GOP candidate Gingrich in his pro-life position and think he laid it out quite eloquently.

Newt Gingrich -- Life Begins at Implantation

Not really feeling GOP candidate Newt Gingrich's position on claiming life begins at implantation:

1. Science clearly shows life begins at fertilization.
2. He is Catholic and this goes against Catholic Church teaching.

This being said, he does appear to be very pro-life, despite changing positions during his career. People change, grow, and improve their character.

Your thoughts?

Inspired to Speak, Are you?

Every Thanksgiving I spend a portion of my day going through my entire contacts list to tell those dear to me “Happy Thanksgiving”. As I went from A to Z sending text messages and emails I clicked on Kortney Blythe Gordon’s name and started to type . . . Then I remembered Kortney and baby Sophy are no longer with us . . .

For those of you who do not follow my blog: Korney was a dear friend of mine who died in a tragic car accident that took the life of her 21 week old unborn baby and another pro-life hero named Jon Scharfenberger. Kortney dedicated her life to defending the unborn, and educating others across the country to do the same (read my blog about her work and what an inspiration she is).

As I very suddenly remembered that Kortney died in a car accident, my heart broke. I sat mourning the loss of such a wonderful person, and once again the question I’ve asked over and over again came to mind: “Why? Why Kortney? She did so much when many people do nothing.” Babies are dying daily by the thousands, and millions of people are apathetic. Even those who are “pro-life”. Many don’t stand firm to their “pro-life” convictions, some won’t say a word when their friend is considering having an abortion, and others are not willing to let go of even a little bit of free time to defend life.

Kortney was in her mid 20s, just married, and had her first little baby on the way. Her life was short, but my gosh did she live a life in service to God. She inspired many beyond words, and into action. She may not be here to save babies and encourage others to do the same, but we have the inspiring memory of Kortney, along with the ability to do what she did. So, here are the questions I ask myself, and I challenge you to do the same:

Will I pray for an end to abortion?
Will I give whatever time I can to defend the unborn?
Will I always be there for anyone who is considering an abortion and who needs to talk?

In honor of Kortney, let’s say yes! Start with an hour a week, or even an hour a day! Give whatever you can. As Kortney once told me this work is so much bigger than us; it’s “God’s work” and “it’s our duty to help others”.

p.s. Kortney’s life can still inspire us, I encourage you to read this blog about just one of my many experiences with her.

Scared to Speak about Abortion

"When they deliver you up, do not be anxious about how you are to speak or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour; for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you." ~ Matthew 10:19-20 ~

Never be afraid to speak the truth. . .

I’m currently taking a college level speech class at a community college in San Bernardino. Throughout the semester my teacher encouraged people to pick hot and controversial topics such as gay marriage and euthanasia for the upcoming persuasive speech. The teacher really wanted heart changing issues discussed. However, there was one topic she said we weren’t allowed to cover -- abortion. Why? Because she said “No way someone is going to get up here and call me a baby killer.” My blood was literally boiling as she said this, and for three reasons:
1.  She was being biased, and discriminating against people who oppose abortion. (Did I mention she constantly encourages our class to go to Planned Parenthood for their ‘reproductive services’?)

2.  It enrages me when pro-lifers get out there and start screaming “baby killers” and “murders” because this does NOT open a gateway for dialogue that could change a heart. I’m pro-life and don’t even want to hear or talk to people who hoot and holler about “baby killers”.

3.  She scared -- actually terrified -- people out of speaking against abortion, when it can already be hard enough to talk about the issue in out present culture.
Furthermore, my teacher said that people could argue the pro-abortion position. What?!? Okay this just enraged me. I had no intention of doing a speech on abortion or anything even related to the topic, but her indoctrination and discrimination pushed me over the boiling point. I decided to dance around the topic of abortion and give a speech on something that would still have an impact on my class of 40 students, on the issue of abortion. For the last three weeks I have worked hours every single day researching and perfecting a speech on the abortion breast cancer (ABC) link.

I went into today’s class knowing full well that I could be marked down significantly just because of my topic, even though I wasn’t talking directly about abortion ending the life of an unborn child, but about how abortion greatly increases a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer since it stops the breast from further developing while at a cancer vulnerable stage. (Learn more here.)

Here is how it went, and I’ll share with you what stuck out the most to me today:

My teacher was the only one that knew the topic before hand, and when I handed her my grading sheet she was already acting rather cold, especially in comparison to her normal demeanor. I ignored it and prayed for the Holy Spirit to speak through me, and began my speech. Throughout the speech the class was very attentive and responsive. My teacher made mean faces, had her arms crossed, and shook her head nearly the entire time. Did she make me nervous? Heck yes! But I kept going and I refused to let her silence the truth of the subject. When I sat down in my chair my heart was still racing uncontrollably and I was shaking.

I’m embarrassed to say it, but I was literally terrified because of how she acted. I have only ever felt that way two times in my life. Once when a friend of mine was arrested for standing on a public sidewalk praying and passing out roses to mother’s walking into the abortion clinic and the second time when I myself was detained for speaking about abortion in a public area. My friend was put into jail over night and later fought a court battle, and won. I was kept for about 20 minutes then released because the police couldn’t find a reason to book me.

In the end, my point is that the teacher scared me so badly I literally felt exactly as I had when the police treated my friend and I as though we had done something horrible, and my life was in danger. Just like that day I was detained on the streets for having a peaceful conversation, someone (my teacher) scared me and bullied me in an effort to silence my voice from speaking on behalf of children in the womb.

I beg you, please don’t allow our pro-abortion culture to silence you. You can save lives and change hearts with your voice. Speak the truth and do not be afraid for this is God’s work and He will always take care of you.

For the Dignity of the Born and Unborn,

Timmerie

P.S. I had 5 people approach me after class wanting to know more, saying they were glad I covered the topic because they never would have known, and to say I delivered the issue well.

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving!

Sing unto the Lord with thanksgiving; sing praise upon the harp unto our God:
Who covereth the heaven with clouds, who prepareth rain for the earth,
who maketh grass to grow upon the mountains.
