Statement on Komen and Planned Parenthood Funding

Pro-Life Statement, Priests For Life on the Susan G. Komen Foundation and Planned Parenthood:

Today the Susan G. Komen Foundation made an announcement that appears as if they have reversed themselves on funding of Planned Parenthood. 

It is unclear at this time if they have in fact reversed themselves. 

What we know has happened this week was nothing short of a Mafia shakedown by Planned Parenthood against the Susan G. Komen Foundation. It was little more than a hostage-taking by an abortion bully. 

Planned Parenthood told the Komen Foundation, “Either give us money or we will destroy you.” They were aided and abetted in this hostage-taking by the mainstream media.

Susan G. Komen withheld Planned Parenthood funding for two laudatory reasons: they do not fund groups under criminal investigation and they do not support groups that do not actually help women in need of breast health care. 

Planned Parenthood is under legislative and criminal investigations all over this country. What’s more, Planned Parenthood does not provide mammograms even though they claim they do. 

What Planned Parenthood did this week was unleash their multi-million dollar fury and political might against a group wholly unprepared for such a political attack. The Susan G. Komen Foundation is a non-profit charity dedicated to curing breast cancer. Planned Parenthood is a political machine dedicated to attacking anyone and anything that stands in its way. 

Planned Parenthood tried this week to utterly destroy the Susan G. Komen Foundaton and they were well on their way to doing just that. They made it abundantly clear they care more for abortion than for protecting women’s lives. 

This is not the first time. When the country was debating national health care, Planned Parenthood was quite willing to kill the bill rather than allow even minor abortion restrictions in it. Later, Planned Parenthood pushed President Obama toward a government shutdown rather than allow Planned Parenthood funding restrictions in the federal budget. 

Planned Parenthood has shown they care more about abortion and about protecting their funding streams than any other thing, including women’s lives. 

At this point, pro-lifers should cease their support of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. We should wait and see what happens. We know there are five more Komen grants to Planned Parenthood in the pipeline. If any more come up, we will know we have lost and Planned Parenthood has won and we will take appropriate actions at that time. 

Pro-lifers should not regret the work we have done over the past days on this issue. We should only regret we could not have done more to make Komen strong and able to fight off the thuggish abortion giant, Planned Parenthood. 

We should pray for Nancy Brinker and her colleagues at the Susan G. Komen Foundation, that they have the strength to stop funding Planned Parenthood. We should turn all of our fire on Planned Parenthood and show them for the criminal enterprise they really are.

Thank Komen

Yesterday Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the largest breast cancer organization, announced they are ceasing all funding to Planned Parenthood through donations and grants. This is big news for pro-lifers who have continuously pointed out and protested the shocking affiliation between Komen and Planned Parenthood given that abortion significantly increases a woman's risk of breast cancer.

Thanks to pressures from pro-life advocates across the country, Komen has stopped funding the largest abortion provider in the United States -- Planned Parenthood. Komen has received thousands of emails from pro-abortion organizations criticizing the defunding of Planned Parenthood.

Profits from Popular Christmas Flowers Pay for Abortions

Planned Parenthood is once again raking in the money from everyday people, even during the Christmas season. The festive poinsettia plants that are used to decorate churches and homes over the Christmas season are helping to fund Planned Parenthood.

Paul Ecke Ranch, the world's largest distributor of poinsettias, is a large benefactor of Planned Parenthood. For years Paul Ecke's family has been recognized as one of the largest abortion supporters in San Diego.

This Christmas season I ask you to please purchase your poinsettia plants with caution this year, by checking if the poinsettia came from Ecke's Ranch. Every time I see a poinsettia plant I check the tag to see whether or not they're from Ecke's Ranch.

Congressional investigation of Planned Parenthood: What to expect

Yesterday came the welcome news that a congressional committee has launched an investigation of Planned Parenthood.

Republican Congressman Cliff Stearns (pictured right), Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations (under the Energy & Commerce Committee), had been threatening a probe for months, particularly after Americans United for Life released a damning report in July documenting decades of malfeasance by the United States’ largest abortion provider.

Stearns followed through and on September 15  issued a letter to Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards requesting 12 years’ worth of financial records, state audits, and policies from both Planned Parenthood Federation of America and its 83 affiliates, to be handed over “within two weeks of the date of this letter,” or by tomorrow, September 29.

According to the letter, Stearns’ committee will investigate improper billing and overbilling by PP affiliates to the government; comingling of government funds intended for Titles X and XIX with PP’s abortion operations, which would be illegal; and PP’s policies and procedures for reporting sex abuse and trafficking to authorities.

AUL’s report documented that PP affiliates have indeed been caught overbilling, failing to report minor sex abuse, and failing to comply with parental involvement laws, to name just three infractions of many.
PP got its PR ducks in a row before announcing news of the investigation, obviously alerting Washington Post pro-abort go-to reporter Sarah Kliff and readying Democrat pro-abort Congressman Henry Waxman’s protest letter for simultaneous release with its own press statement. Note the timing…

I spoke with Charmaine Yoest, president of AUL, and asked what to expect next. She said PP could take one of four actions: 1) provide only undamaging, incomplete information; 2) provide massive amounts of material that would take years to wade through and hope no one finds any ugly details; 3) stonewall – ask for more time; 4) provide accurate information.

#3, stonewalling appears unlikely, because it would make the organization look like it has something to hide. In fact PP wrote in its statement it “is responding to the request in a timely manner.”

#2, providing TMI, would also seem unlikely, because even if handing over needles in a haystack to the government, PP would still be handing them over.

#1 or #2 are most likely. Planned Parenthood is legally obligated to respond to Stearns’ subpoenas.

Then what?

Stearns’ staff will investigate PP’s paperwork and issue a public report. They can put all of PP’s submitted information in the report, making it public. If they find a smoking gun or guns, they can follow up with hearings.

Examining subpoenaed documents is precisely how Solyndra was exposed – by this same committee. From ABC News, September 13:

The emails were uncovered by investigators for the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which will hold hearings on the Solyndra loan Wednesday. The Republican-led House has been investigating the Obama administration’s green energy loan program for months…. Last week, the FBI raided the factory….

Finding damaging information PP’s top-notch attorneys may attempt to hide will depend on how good Stearns’ staff is.  I asked Charmaine if Stearns can ask outside organizations that are PP-savvy to examine PP’s documents, such as AUL or American Life League’s STOPP. She said it is totally legal and acceptable for a congressional committee to request investigatory help from outside experts.

I hope Congressman Stearns does so. I think he will. He was brave going into this, knowing the other side would malign him with both barrels. I expect he will want to do all he can to find as much evidence as possible of PP’s wrong-doing.

I was just browsing through a few pro-life articles and I came across 'Back to School Means Back to Work for Planned Parenthood' by Kristen Hawkins, Executive Director of Students for Life of America. Now I'm aware that Planned Parenthood has already been in high schools and colleges targeting young people with their idea of 'reproductive health care' (sex education, contraception, and abortion), but now they are amping up their sex-ed campaign more than ever. I encourage you, no matter your age, to read the article below and beware! Help educate your friends, family, children, and coworkers because Planned Parenthood does not care for the well being of these students. Planned Parenthood cares about manipulating open minded young people into bringing revenue in for them with abortion and contraceptive service.

Does the de-funding of Planed Parenthood in Indiana hurt the people of Indiana or are they still able to receive the care they need?


In May of this year the House, Senate, and governor of Indiana passed a bill de-funding Planned Parenthood in their state. Why? Planned Parenthood has been exposed numerous times over the years, and just this year Live Action has released over 8 undercover investigations exposing the lies and illegal activities of Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood was not de-funded because of moral religious or beliefs, or because they perform abortions; but because of their lies, involvement it human trafficking, covering up of sexual offenders, lack of reporting sexual abuse of minors as young at 13, and much more. Immediately after Indiana de-funded Planned Parenthood the Obama Administration threatened to strip Medicaid funding in Indiana.


“The Obama administration is holding patients’ health hostage in return for funding the largest abortion provider in the country,” said Lila Rose 0f Live Action. “This abuse of power is a threat to every other state – that no matter the cost or consequences, this Administration will sacrifice healthcare for the needy to continue pouring tax dollars into Planned Parenthood.”

Saint Joseph vs Today’s Dad

Sunday I celebrated Fathers Day with my parents, siblings, cousins, and grandparents. We had a barbecue and spent the day outside with all the little cousins running around eating up the attention. Earlier that morning I sat in Mass and looked at the statue of Saint Joseph behind the choir and reflected on Saint Joseph as protector of the Holy Family (Virgin Mary and Jesus). Saint Joseph’s betrothed wife was pregnant by the power of the Holy Spirit, and despite any doubt, or the embarrassment of Mary being thought of as unfaithful, Saint Joseph accepted his duty as the foster father of Jesus. Even through hard times, when the Holy Family had to flee to Egypt, Saint Joseph protected his family.

As I continued to think through this I thought of the many unborn children who were aborted because of the father’s apathy or his pressuring of the mother of his child to abort. There is a big social difference between today and the time of Jesus, and it broke my heart that morning to think of all the fathers who were not celebrating Father’s Day because of their apathy; an apathy that was not known to Saint Joseph.

This has continued to be on my mind this week. . . While I was working on a "Call to Action" piece for young people to be involved in pro-life work, I asked a friend of mine what she would say to encourage others be be involved in pro-life ministry. Here is what she sent me:

“I encourage men to stand up for the women in their life, and recognize that they are needed more than ever in these decisions. There are better choices and better options (than aborton), and the baby is theirs too. Men have a say in this choice. Many women would not have aborted their children if they knew they had the father’s support. I call upon men in society to be bold, and to stand up for life!” -- Maddie Lopez Age 16

Like me, Maddie is a young woman who has sidewalk counseled many times before, and we often see women at the abortion clinic who share that they are aborting because their boyfriend wasn’t excited or didn’t care when they said they were pregnant. Sometimes the boyfriend even insists on abortion.

Similar to Maddie, I encourage men to be protectors of their children both inside and outside of the womb. The child’s environment shouldn't be the influence that determines how your child will be cared for. Think again to the example of St. Joseph, he embraced the opportunity to be a father to the baby of an unwed mother, Mary. St. Joseph can be thought of as one of the greatest of men because he said, "yes", and in doing so raised the Greatest Man of all time, Jesus. I hope to see more happy fathers next Fathers Day who are wonderful role-models just like Saint Joseph.

Urgent Prayer Request!

Please pray for a 15 year old young lady who is being pressured into an abortion by her mother.

Last weekend a 15 years old girl was taken to Planned Parenthood by her mother. As soon as her mom dropped her off, the young woman left Planned Parenthood. The mom is forcing her daughter to have an abortion and has scheduled the abortion for Friday the 10th at a Planned Parenthood in Tustin, California. 

Please pray for this young woman, her unborn child, and all those who are counseling her.

Update June 7 -- A woman by the name of Connie is in direct contact with the young lady being forced into having an abortion.  Many resources are being passed on to her, but there is some difficulty due to the teenager being underage and needing somewhere to legally stay.  Please keep praying for this young lady as she struggles with her mother to keep her child's life.

Update June 8 -- Through an email, chain I just received update on the 15 year old girl whose mom was attempting to force her to have an abortion.  She is two months pregnant and has been staying in different temporary locations since previously staying at the boyfriend's house, where the mother later sent the police looking for her daughter.  Good news is that the young lady has a meeting scheduled for later today with a lawyer at a pro-life clinic.  When asked how the young girl is doing, the counselor in contact with the 15 year old shared that she is "very afraid, quiet, (and) like a lost child".  Please continue to pray for this young lady as she is now a 2 month pregnant run away and desperately needs loving support.
