Come and follow Me, and I will give you peace.

Guest blog by 18 year old Sarah Durling
It was January 22 2011, the day of the Walk for Life West Coast! That was the day that started it all. About a week before the walk, I started doubting that Campus Life Tours was my calling. After the Walk for Life, a few friends and I went to mass at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church in San Francisco. I knew I had a doubtful heart at the time, so I asked the Lord, “Am I really supposed to go on Campus Life Tours? What do you want me to do?” Then I said that famous line, “Lord, please use me.” We stood to listen to the Gospel and I could not believe my ears! The reading was from Matthew,
“As he was walking along the Sea of Galilee he watched two brothers, Simon now known as Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea. They were fishermen. He said to them, “Come after me and I will make you fishers of men.” They immediately abandoned their nets and became his followers.” ~ Matthew 4:18-20 ~
Then the priest gave his homily, “If you feel that doing pro-life work for your whole life is what God wants, or if you have this burning desire to save babies from abortion, that is what God is calling you to do!” When the priest said that, I immediately knelt down in thanksgiving! Now I know that is what God wanted me to do! Now I have a handful of pro-life missionary groups lined up including Campus Life Tours.

When I went to the Survivor’s camp after deciding to join Campus Life Tours, something happened to me that I would never forget. Our camp was standing on Venice Beach in the middle of huge crowds and walkways with signs of aborted children to show the truth to our peers. I was standing in front of a lady’s booth, and after a while, she started to get fed up with me. She came up to me and said, “I am sorry, but I cannot have you in front of my booth. I am trying to eat my lunch and I cannot eat with your picture facing toward me. Can you please move?” I had not gotten permission to move so I told her “No.” She obviously did not like that answer. “No, you HAVE to move.” Then she tried to take my sign from me. I pulled it out of her hands and said, “I am not moving from this spot unless I am told by my leader.” Then the unthinkable happened. She tried to push me and my sign over!

I stood there no matter how hard she pushed on my sign. God was definitely there helping me! Since she could not push me over, she retreated to her booth and just glared at me. Eventually, a few friends came over and stood with me after I called a leader and said that someone tried to push me over. A few minutes later, I heard some people yelling a little ways away from me and my sign. I looked over just in time to see a young woman from a shop behind us kick a sign in! She turned around after she broke the sign and yelled, “Who’s next?!?” Oh no…that would be me. I tried to keep my mind off of what the woman had just said, so I was engaged in conversations with people walking by asking them what they thought of the pictures. Then the lady that tried to take my sign away from me came up to me shaking her prayer book in my and my friend’s faces yelling, “These are prayers from the bible! You should read them!” In my mind I was screaming, “I do!” But it never came out because I did not want to ruin my video.

Then, as one Survivor tried to reason with her, another Survivor came and stood back to back with me. Oh what is happening now? I looked behind me when I heard some yelling from the lady who broke our sign earlier! She was in my friend’s face yelling at him when he intercepted her as she tried to jump on me from behind! Thank goodness he was there or else my nose might have been broken from this mad woman. The woman continued to yell, not even an inch from his face! “Touch me! Touch me! Touch me mother trucker!” She yelled that over and over again. Then she finally backed off. The thought came to my mind, “Could anything else happen?” But I stupidly jinxed myself and lo and behold! A man came from behind some palm trees carrying a plastic chair that had something on it. It was pretty much dripping with whatever was on the chair, and he was bringing it over to me! A couple of girls screamed when he walked passed them and I immediately knew that it was not going to be pleasant. He walked up to me and my sign and shoved the chair slowly against my sign – the chair was covered in a swarm of bees! In my mind, I started totally freaking out by that time. My friend and fellow Survivor said calmly, “No matter what you do to us, we are not going to move.”

Then the man who put the chair in front of my sign simply picked up the chair again and walked off. For about three seconds, I kept telling myself not to cry. The adrenaline was running through me at five hundred miles per hour! Then unexpectedly, a hand was placed on my shoulder! “Oh this is going to be my doom!” I thought. When I turned around to “face my doom”, I turned to find an old man. He looked so kind, his eyes were kind, so I figured he would not hit me. He looked at me with those kind eyes as he said this,
“I am so proud of you child. I do not think that I would have been able to be that brave in your situation. I know for sure that God will save you and your friends a special place in Heaven and you will receive your crown in His kingdom. Remember this, Rescue those who are being dragged to death, and to those tottering to execution withdraw not.”
Then as fast as he appeared, he disappeared! Then I broke down and cried. Was this the Lord who just appeared to me? He quoted my favorite verse in the Bible perfectly and with such love! I could not believe it. Then another friend came to my aide and escorted me away from the commotion. I do not know for sure if God just appeared to me, or if it was an angel sent from heaven, but what I do know is that day changed the little spit of fire in my soul into a roaring fire that cannot be quenched!

Now I am on Campus Life Tours and it is everything that I expected! I love it so much, and I feel like I have another family in Southern California. A very large family filled with brothers and sisters who are all fighting for the same thing. While I was on tour last semester, I experienced something that I had not experience before. I know it may sound very crazy, but I felt the devil’s presence. I know it sounds like all voodoo and stuff like that, but when I was in front of 'Woman’s Health Specialists' in Sacramento of all places, I felt something wrong there – very wrong.

We went out in the middle of the night to chalk all over the sidewalk in front of this horrific clinic and as I was chalking, something happened that was really hard to explain at first. I was chalking as fast as I could, chalking things like “Your baby has a heartbeat at only twenty-one days” and loving messages all over the sidewalk. Then my piece of chalk fell out of my hand, but this did not feel like it just fell out, it felt like it was pulled out of my hand! Like I said, it sounds crazy, but it did happen. It happened a few more times, and every time the chalk was pulled out of my hand, I would scratch my knuckles. By the end of the night, my knuckles were pretty skinned up and they definitely hurt. I think that the devil will test us in millions of ways through our lifetime and we must not let him succeed ever! There were times where I would feel like giving up, but I could not let the devil win! I had to keep strong no matter what happened, and no matter what questions or insults were thrown at me.

When we went to Sacramento State University, John Ficker, who works with Project Truth, brought a woman over to me. “Sarah, this young lady does not want to hear us men talk about our views because we would not understand.” I shook the woman’s hand introducing myself with a friendly smile. Instead of saying ‘nice to meet you’ or anything like that, she asked me, “How old are you sweetie?” I cringed at the thought of her calling me sweetie, it makes me feel like I am eight years old. “Eighteen, what does that have to do with our conversation?” She looked at John with disbelief,

“You brought me to an eighteen year old?” John tried to calm her down as she was coming to her boiling point, “Well we have some older women here as well if you would like to talk to one of them,” she pretty much just brushed him off. “I did not know s*** when I was eighteen. What could she possibly know?” John came to my defense, “Whoa, you are just going to wave her off just because of how old she is? I think that this eighteen year old is smarter than you.” She scoffed at the comment, “Oh yeah?” John then said, “Alright let us have a contest to see if this eighteen year old is smarter than this…oh how old are you?” She made herself look all high and mighty and said, “Thirty.” All I was thinking was, “Oh this is one of those brick walls…”

John continued, “Alright let us see who is smarter. At what age does a fetus, embryo, whatever you want to call it, when does her heart start beating?” The woman looked like it was the easiest question and prepared herself to win our little contest. “Eighteen weeks of course!” WHAT? Four months? John made a buzzer noise and declared her the loser of our contest and asked me for the correct answer, “Eighteen to twenty-one DAYS.” The lady stared at me with a cold stare that could rip you apart, but with my Lord, I stood strong.

After a million of the usual questions, she finally blurted out, “Would you give your life to save these fetuses?!?!” Without even a second thought I told her calmly, “Yes, of course I would if that means that they will live.” She threw up her hands, “I can’t talk to you anymore! You are driving me crazy!” I wish I could have talked to her a little while longer, but I had already put a crack in the brick wall and maybe she will look at that crack later. That is what I hope.

Like I said before, you will be tested. I was asked if I would give up my life to save babies! Of course I would, but if someone asked you that question, what would you have answered? Will you follow me and give up semesters and summers of your life to go save babies? The one important question is – What will you do to serve your Lord?

“If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.”~ John 12:26 ~

Where the Pro-Life Leaders of Tomorrow are Born

This is a guest post by Claudia Gutierrez age 17 from Napa, California

This Veteran’s Day Weekend, I had the privilege of attending the first International Pro-Life Youth Conference. I heard pro-life leaders from all over the world encourage us to follow in their footsteps and set the world ablaze with the pro-life message. Prior to attending this conference, I had not been setting the world ablaze—not even close. My pro-life work in those past couple weeks wouldn’t have even amounted to a spark! That is the danger of losing one’s momentum when it comes to activism; you can always find a reason NOT to do it!

Boy, was I in for an awakening when I sat down for the first speech at the conference. Before Lila Rose had even finished speaking, my soul had been reignited with the fire of pro-life activism, and I was raring to go. Her message about how you are never too young to make a difference as long as you get out there and make the effort really hit close to home. In Napa, California, I run my own pro-life club and my mind was racing with all of the new and exciting ideas for events I could hold with this club. I could not wait to go home and get to work sharing the pro-life message.

Throughout the weekend, I listened to each qualified and distinguished speaker with keen ears and bated breath. I was captivated by every one of them and felt compelled to act; my heart was moved so strongly. I was most intrigued by the Irish speakers, and not just because of their wonderful accents! The pro-life movement in Ireland is fascinating because, well, it was SUCCESSFUL! I had no idea that any countries in Europe were still anti-abortion, especially one as well-known as Ireland. Another encouraging aspect of their pro-life movement was that it was a YOUTH-movement! It was the young people of Ireland that kept abortion out of their country.

The speakers from Ireland’s pro-life organization, Youth Defence, detailed how it was a constant battle to keep abortion out of their country, what with there being pressure on all sides from the European Union and the United Nations. Even though they described their struggle as constant, it gave me hope, as an American, that one day we will be able to rid our country of the evil of abortion. It will undoubtedly be a long road ahead before we see abortion outlawed in America, but before we can even think of succeeding in the courts, we have to succeed on the streets, in the press, and ultimately in the hearts of the American people. We will have to work tirelessly and selflessly to follow in the footsteps of Ireland and make abortion unthinkable in our country—and in the whole world—by continuing to save babies and change hearts.

Being a defender of life is not a new premise, but it is still the most noble work one can perform. In fact, this quote from Elie Wiesel, a man of extraordinary courage in a time of great terror -- the Jewish Holocaust -- perfectly describes why we cannot simply sit back and watch while our brothers and sisters are the victims of injustice:
“I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.”
It is by these words that I now live my life. Neutrality and silence are lethal—it is only through courage and by the light of God that we can end abortion. And it all starts with YOU making the choice to stand for what’s right—to stand for life. So, it is in this spirit of love for the unborn that I encourage you to read about the message of the International ProLife Youth Conference and I can guarantee that you too will be ready to set the world ablaze.

For the babies!

International ProLife Youth Conference Day 2

Couldn't make it? No worries, you can still take the knowledge and tools that were given. . .

Warwick Pascoe – Making of a Masterpiece

If people understood how beautiful the masterpiece of human beings is, they would value life so much more. Warwick Pascoe opened his talk with this question, “Has anyone ever told you that you are a masterpiece?”

No one argues whether or not the baby in this picture is human and whether or not it should be protected. Warwick gives presentations in schools, colleges, prisons, and in business settings all over New Zealand where he shows the beautiful masterpieces of the child developing in utero. Warwick teaches about fetal development in the hope of creating better understand of the masterpiece of human beings -- even at the earliest stages of development in the womb.

There is no debate about what has been created in the womb. It is the value of what has been created which is debated. Therefore, respect the value of your own masterpiece and those of others. Help others to see the masterpiece of human development because every individual is a unique masterpiece.

Panel Forum: Advocating Life on Your Campus

Jeff White of Survivors (Moderator)
Panelists:
Kristina Garza of Survivors
Joe Langfeld of Human Life Alliance
Rebecca Roughneed of Youth Defence
Allison Aranda of Life Legal Defense Coalition

Kristina Garza, Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust

“I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.”
~ Mother Teresa ~

In 2006 Kristina ran into Survivors Campus Life Team, which does abortion education on college campuses, on her campus. She was handed a peice of literature that later led her to do something about abortion. Always pro-life, however apathetic, Kristina started to speak out against abortion because others were, and had reached out to her. Kristina said “You never know the seeds you’re planting.” No matter how much time you give, God will use you. It’s important that you at least do something!

Joe Langfeld, Human Life Alliance

“You’re prolife. So what? What are you going to do about it?” Joe Langfeld started his talk off with this challenge.

Human Life Alliance (HLA) reaches millions of high school and college students accross the country with their pro-life literature. HLA works hard to create materials that reach students where they’re at. Many students after reading the literature say “they would never have read it if they knew it was pro-life”. Thanks to fantastic marketing, HLA has created attention grabbing images which attract people to read their materials. With this in mind, Joe strongly reminded conference attendees to reach people where they’re at. Remember, what you’re marketing may not be appealing to you as a pro-lifer but it may be to someone who is not pro-life.

Joe reminded the young people present “Your beliefs will show up in your actions everywhere you go.” Joe shared that many years ago he quit a job when the political candidate he worked for decided to change his position on abortion to pro-abortion after formerly being pro-life… The politician acknowledged he knew abortion was wrong but for furthering his work he would change sides and support pro-abortion legislation.

Joe told an amazing story of a woman that contacted Joe after having received a piece of HLA literature two years prior. The young woman later used that literature to convince her own mother not to make her have an abortion, and her child is alive today because of it.

In closing Joe posed this challenge: “Think about doing something big and bold. What can reach the most people as possible?”

Rebecca Roughneen, Youth Defense

Rebecca, her comrades, and vigilant pro-lifers that came before her, have helped to maintain an Abortion Free Ireland! Rebecca considers the most important pro-life work to be that which is done on campuses reaching young women.

Rebecca recalls when a friend of hers in college became pregnant and traveled to Europe to obtain an abortion (in Ireland abortion is illegal). Rebecca regrets and feels bad for not speaking up to help her friend from aborting the child. After this experience Rebecca felt called to be active in the fight against abortion. Rebecca encourages everyone to at least give an hour a week to the pro-life movement because “every person here can end abortion!”

Several years ago, during a time of great political struggle to keep abortion illegal in Ireland, seven youth people took to the streets with images of aborted children and they coordinated constant prayer vigils and rallies. If those seven young people, 20 years ago in Ireland, had not stood up and fought against abortion, abortion would be legal today in Ireland. Ireland is abortion free to this day and it’s because people give whatever time they can to stand against the injustice of abortion of the babies.

Rebecca closed by saying, “It’s so easy to save babies. A lot of times, all it takes is you standing there in front of the abortion clinic praying.”

Allison Aranda, Attorney at Life Legal Defense Coalition

Life Legal Defense is willing to persevere in the long process to stand up for what is just and right and will work with pro-lifers who need help in legal cases. Allison shared her shock when years ago she heard of Survivors Campus Life Team and other people who were arrested for talking about abortion while standing on a public sidewalk. This made no sense to her and she was appalled! Soon there after, Allison went to checkout Survivors activism for the first time, only to be immediately surprised upon arrival, because the police were already at the clinic and were trying to arrest the group for holding signs on a public sidewalk and for writing with chalk “Choose Life” along with other pro-life messages. She was shocked because they weren’t doing anything wrong! She said, “Really, for using chalk that washes off?” Since then Allison has worked, with groups like Survivors, to educate pro-life activists and prayer warriors about their civil rights and how to defend those rights when erroneously challenged, even when the challenge comes from law enforcement.

Sometimes people will do whatever it takes just to keep your message from getting out into the community, and they are successful at times by just taking your signs or holding you in a police car for an hour. Don’t allow people of authority to bully you into not standing up for what you believe in! Unfortunately, there will always be an attempt to silence your pro-life work, just because of your message and not because you’re doing something wrong.

Jill Stanek, JillStanek.com – New Media and Social Media:
The next HUGE pro-life frontier

Jill began by sharing about demographics of the present generation -- Generation Y-- (those born between 1982-2002). Jill explained that my generation is one of “Digital Natives” because we are so in tune with technology from texting, Facebook, Twitter, smart phones, and more. Considering the saviness of Generation Y, Jill encouraged conference participants to blog, and went on to share a little bit about how her own personal blog reaches thousands of people every single day. That’s a lot of people who can be influenced simply through utilizing technology and writing about abortion. (See Jill’s blogging tips given during the social/new media session on day 1.)

Kortney Blyth Gordon an Inspiration

Last night the pro-life movement lost a wonderful person. Kortney Blythe Gordon (Student’s for Life’s Field Director) and her 21 week old unborn child were killed in a head on collision traveling home from a Students for Life conference. One person in the vehicle that hit them died, another Students for Life leader Jon Scharfenberger is in critical condition, and two students have been severely wounded. Not only have we lost a wonderful person, but the unborn have lost a true hero who selflessly dedicated her life to advocating for the lives of the unborn.

Kortney was married earlier this year and was pregnant with her first child. I remember how excited I was just a few months ago when her Uncle Don told me (while we were sidewalk counseling in Los Angeles) that Kortney was expecting a little baby! Kortney’s Uncle Don, whom I call Uncle Don because of her, is another pro-life hero who has saved over 3,000 babies from abortion through sidewalk counseling, and he was one of the main inspirations in her pro-life work.

Kortney has been a long time friend and inspiration to me. I met her through our work with Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust many years ago; where she was responsible for training hundreds of pro-life youth to stand in defense of the unborn. Kortney taught me how to sidewalk counsel when I was 13. She taught me that above all when counseling women against abortion to love each and every woman who entered the clinic because God loves us. To respond to women gently and to do everything in my power to save them from loosing their child and to save that precious unborn child form death. I remember standing outside of numerous abortion clinic doors praying and speaking with her while we waited to be the last intervention between that unborn child and the abortion procedure room.

Kortney's Baby Sophy
I remember the very first time I went sidewalk counseling; I was practically a little girl standing there next to Kortney at one of the busiest abortion clinics in Los Angeles on a Saturday morning at about 6:30 a.m. With the little training of sidewalk counseling I had received the day before during Survivors Pro Life Training Camp, I remember looking up at her and saying, “I don’t know if I can do this. I have to talk to this woman who is about to have her baby killed, and you want me to try and stop her?” I realized that no bit of training could prepare me for such a task and that I wanted Kortney to do it because she had done it before. Kortney reminded me that what we were doing was so much bigger than us and that it’s “God’s work” and that “it’s our duty to help others”.

I was trembling, had knots in my stomach at the thought of what was happening inside the building, I was on the verge of tears, and begging Kortney to help me because I thought I couldn’t do it. I even asked her, “Who’s going to listen to a little girl like me?” There I was saying I was not ready, and a woman walked up who needed help. Kortney grabbed me by the arm and with a huge smile on her face and said “come on, we’ll do it together” . . .

Kortney lead the conversation and kept pulling me along to help. I showed the woman how far along she was in her pregnancy and shared with her that her baby already had little fingers, toes, and a beating heart. Kortney talked with the woman asking her what she needed and the lady shared much information and hurt that she was going through. Last I said, “I know I can’t keep your baby, even though I wish I could; I’m too young. But I can find you someone who will keep him for you!” The lady giggled, thanked us, and went inside. Minutes later the woman came out and asked Kortney for help cause she wanted to give her baby life! The woman was then taken to a pregnancy resource center which assisted her through her pregnancy.

Right away Kortney told me I did a good job and reminded me to just keep talking to those women in need because God put us there to help them. I remember praying to the Holy Spirit to place the words in me because I had no idea what to say even with all the knowledge about fetal development and abortion risks. From that day on, every time I sidewalk counsel, I recall Kortney’s words telling me “it’s God’s work” and that I needed to love each and every women I encounter because “it’s our duty”.

Kortney and I have stayed in contact over the years, even after she moved to the east coast to work for Rock for Life and later for Students for Life. I can tell you that she has been missed in so many ways. From her courage, to her abundance of joy. We’ve worked on different projects together as I later took a leadership position with Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust at the same time she left. I’ve taught some of the same materials she taught me so many years ago, and have even used many of the materials she developed. Just a few weeks ago she was encouraging me to drop everything and move to the East Coast to work with her at Students for Life.

I pray that Kortney’s story of unconditional love and courage continue to inspire many. Every day since I’ve known Kortney, she continued to dedicate her life to saving babies and ending abortion. She reached out to thousands across the world to tell them about abortion, she helped hundreds of women through their pregnancies, she was arrested when she was unlawfully told she couldn’t stand somewhere to defend life, and NEVER did she stop until the day she departed this life. She died in service to God and out of love for the unborn as she travelled home from a Students for Life conference.

May our Lord receive His faithful servant Kortney and her unborn baby into His hands, and may He comfort her family.

Summer 2011 Update

Hey Guys,

I know it's been a few weeks since my last blog post and I'm very sorry to everyone who has been waiting for news about different events I've been involved with this summer. Here is a little update on what I've been up to the last month. I strongly encourage you to read all the way to the end because your help is needed.

July 6-16th I was blessed with the opportunity to help run Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust's 14th annual ProLife Training Camp. Over 60 young people from across the country were activated and educated to be involved in the fight for the innocent lives in the womb. I personally had the honor of training the new young pro-life activists on ‘Why ProLife: the Child’, social media activism, media interviews, how to write a press release, and videography and photography. You can read more about Survivors ProLife Training Camp at the blog I wrote for ProLife Secular News. Below is the ProLife Falsh Mob I choreographed during camp that was performed at Griffith Park in Hollywood and at Santa Monica Pier:

Since camp I have been on the go with pro-life events in southern California (checkout this blog about an event in San Diego last week) and helping run and chaperon church retreats for high school and middle school age youth. God has blessed me this summer with these opportunities to protect the innocent in the womb and bring youth closer to Christ.

As I've been catching up on emails this morning it has come to my attention that additional funds are needed to pay an outstanding balance from this year's first annual Walk for Life Youth Rally. For those of you who are not aware, this year I coordinated the Walk for Life Youth Rally for the Archdiocese of San Francisco. The rally was held immediately after the 50,000 person West Coast Walk for Life. With a large majority of young people at Walk for Life being between the age of 13 and 25, we saw this as an opportunity to convict young people to be more involved in the pro-life movement.

Walk for Life Youth Rally helped the youth understand different ways to be involved that suite their abilities. I will go into further detail within the next couple of days, but right now I ask you to please consider donating what you can, no matter the amount, to help pay the $5,000 balance of this year's Walk for Life Youth Rally that activated over 3,000 young people to the pro-life movement. Next year’s Walk for Life Youth Rally cannot and will not take place if we do not raise the necessary funds to pay the remaining balance of this year’s rally. Read more about the Walk for Life Youth Rally and watch EWTN's coverage of Walk for Life Youth Rally.

To donate:

Please make the check payable to: SF Archdiocese, Respect Life Program

Survivors Celebrate Mother’s Day by saving 3 babies

I wondered how many women walking into the abortion clinic would still be a mother to a living, breathing, and moving child inside the womb tomorrow.  Would it be a happy Mother’s Day for all?

Three babies are still breathing and safely growing inside their mothers’ wombs because the volunteer efforts of over thirty pro-life warriors outside of an abortion clinic on the day before Mother’s Day.  A group of about 15 young Survivors joined with local sidewalk counselors, youth groups, and Knights of Columbus to celebrate Mother’s Day one day early outside a Family Planning Associates in San Bernardino, California.
The purpose of our visit was to remind each woman that if she were pregnant, then she was already a mother, and to pray that she would have a happy Mother’s Day the next day.  We held homemade, life-affirming Mother’s Day and fetal development signs for all who drove by and entered the clinic to see.  Survivors’ trained sidewalk counselors talked to many mothers outside of the abortion clinic, encouraging them to choose life for their preborn children.  Many women were determined to enter the abortion clinic that morning, and all were met with beautiful bouquets of flowers with attached homemade Mother’s Day cards.

Celebrate Life and Support Mothers

The day before Mother's Day, abortion clinics are still open and thousands of women across the country will enter an abortion clinic a mother and then walk away as the mother of a child who will never live to talk, sing, dance, play sports or enjoy life.

As Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust we know that these innocent children deserve life and that mothers deserve better than abortion! Mother's Day is a beautiful holiday, celebrating the blessing of motherhood and honoring all mothers.

This Mother's Day join Survivors in our annual Mother's Day Outreach to celebrate and encourage life and motherhood!

Harmonizing Mother Earth & Baby in the Womb

Last week, for the 5th consecutive year, I  joined over 30 Survivors from all over southern California to stand for the sanctity of human life in the womb at Earth Fair in San Diego.  This fair is the largest environmental fair in the world, which takes place on the Sunday before Earth Day, on April 20th, where more than 50,000 attendees from all over come together to celebrate mother earth.  Groups stood to protect whales, walruses, and a variety of endangered species where they had their usual booths informing society of their causes.  Exotic hand made items, plants, and organic materials were sold; and in the middle of the mix Planned Parenthood had their usual pink booth set up where they “educated” about reproductive issues and counseled women.

This year, Survivors returned with two booths: one booth was surrounded by the beautiful “Watch me Grow” fetal development signs with the theme “A Person’s a person, no matter how small.” from Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who.  The goal of this booth was to teach young children the beauty of life and of the developing child in the womb.  Children learned about life in the womb and participated in numerous arts and crafts, from beading to coloring in their own t-shirts with the outline of a pro-life cartoon.
On the opposite side of the fair a “Life Booth” was set up with educational information about abortion and contraception, and the crowds were challenged to the reality of abortion with the use of graphic images.

I find this is the perfect opportunity to use abortion images to challenge people with the reality that abortion is the destruction of human life.  We challenged them to see that abortion is not a lesser issue than the abuse of animals and nature.  To help Earth Fair attendees see the wrong of abortion, graphic images of an abused monkey with nails in its head were set next to an image of an aborted baby’s skeleton with fingers, legs, and toes.  There was a caption above the two pictures asking if abusing monkeys is wrong, why isn’t aborting a child wrong as well? While for some, seeing the graphic images was painful, for others the images of an abused monkey next to an aborted child was shocking because they never thought of it that way.  On lookers were challenged to consider, if abusing a monkey is wrong, look at the picture of a brutally aborted 12 week old child and say that the abortion of the the child is not wrong as well.  When faced with that truth people just stopped and stared.  Some cried and others were speechless.  This opened up a conversation on the issue where countless people either changed their position, or now have a position when it comes to abortion.

Throughout the day our group encountered some struggles from those who did not agree with the pro-life message or who loathed being told abortion hurts women and children and would try to cover or stand in front of the signs exposing that truth.  At one point two Survivors were assaulted by a young man who proceeded to kick a hole through one of the graphic signs (the man was chased down and arrested by the San Diego Police Department).  I was proud of the two young men, about 16 years old, who instead of doting on the incident and becoming angered by the assault, stepped back into the crowd and continued to have peaceful conversations where they educated the crowds about about abortion and changed the hearts of many to stand with us in protecting the right to life.

Something that was very difficult for me throughout the day was the support Planned Parenthood received all day long.  At their booth there were at least 20 people waiting at any given time to talk to Planned Parenthood representatives or to write a message that was posted on a bulletin board saying why they support Planned Parenthood (see picture below).  It made me sad to see hundreds of people voicing their support of Planned Parenthood, and hundreds of people walking around with the bright pink “I support Planned Parenthood” button attached to their shirts.  Pro-lifers had to take a bold stance, hold their ground, and reach out to people while Planned Parenthood staff sat in their booth eating up the support.  What made me even more upset was that more than I saw women wearing the pink Planned Parenthood buttons, I saw men everywhere with these buttons.  It’s not only women who love Planned Parenthood.  Men love them too because they don’t have to be responsible for their actions as long as Planned Parenthood is there to abort their children.  I know it’s not just the man involved, but it breaks my heart when I recall some of the women whom I’ve counseled outside the clinic with the common response saying that their man didn’t want the child, he was making them have the abortion, or she was terrified to even tell him she was pregnant.

I found it ironic when some of the Earth Fair participants become angered over the pro-life message because they say “there are animals being abused” or “without abortion, more children will hurt the earth because it’s already over populated”.  My response: “If we cannot even respect ourselves and what lives within us, how can we respect animals, nature, or anything else for that matter?”  Some continued to fight without any thought of abortion as being wrong, and others stopped to listen.  Some people become angered at the horror that was shown on the signs, but as some in the group will say “If it’s hard to look at, that means it’s wrong.”  The abortion images were a true aid that drew people in and caused them to contemplate whether or not abortion is right.

One of the things I love most about the Earth Fair event is that it attracts people of every age, and there are many large groups of teens and young adults.  When I call out to my generation asking them what they think of the signs or about abortion they’re open to talking.  Throughout the day I spoke to at least 20 groups of 3-6 teens, and we had pleasant conversation sharing our thoughts on the issue.  When one or two in the group said they’re impartial or pro-abortion I asked them to look at the literature and signs in front of them and I taught about fetal development, abortion procedures, and how abortion damages both the mother and child.  99% of the time all in the group walk away with a 100% pro-life stance and sincerely thankful for the shared information.

Standing for the sanctity of human life in the womb was a success at Earth Fair, thousands of people were talked to and many hearts were changed.  Seeds were planted that made people think about the issue and recognize the importance of the issue on a global scale.  It was wonderful to be surrounded by many others who support life and who were’t afraid to talk to people who disagreed with them and share why life is so precious.

Happy Easter!

My Birthday Wish

For my birthday nineteenth birthday on April 9th, I'm asking my friends and family for a special gift: help me raise $1,000 for Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust. It's a great cause that activates and educates young people to be involved in the pro-life movement.

I chose Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust because they take a bold stance to defend the life of the unborn.

Please consider giving to my
Birthday Wish, and together we can be apart of the life saving work of Survivors. If you can't give now, I'd really appreciate if you'd share this page with your friends. Thank you and God Bless!
