I’ve Always Loved Christian Bale -- From Little Women to Batman

As little girls many of us fell in love with Christian Bale’s role as the kind and loving Teddy in Little Women. Then we all adored him as the superhero Batman. Yesterday, he did something that touches my heart closely and I’m sure the hearts of many others. Batman (I mean Christian Bale) attempted to visit Chen Guancheng, a blind human rights activist who has been instrumental in speaking out against, and exposing, the One Child Policy in China. In 2006 Chen revealed that over 130,000 forced abortions and sterilizations took place in Linyi County in 2005 alone (this is just ONE county in all of China); because of this Chen and his family have been brutally beaten and have been kept hostage by the Chinese government for the last year after Chen spent roughly 4 years in prison.

Christian Bale is truly a hero for reaching out the way he did. He may not have been able to see Chen Guancheng, but he has brought mass media attention to Chen’s situation and to the One Child Policy in China. Awareness having been created about Chen’s situation by organizations and people across the country is what has lead to better treatment of Chen and his family the last few months. Never underestimate the difference your voice can make.

Let’s be courageous like our hero Batman and speak out against injustices in our world!

Modern Day Martyr for Life -- China

Saints Peter and Paul are two of many martyrs who were killed for what they believe. They weren’t killed for hurting anyone but for sharing the gospel and for standing firm in their convictions. Over the years thousands of men, women, and children have been martyred for standing up against injustices everywhere. The stories of martyrs commonly feel like something that only happened hundreds of years ago and are far from something we would expect to see today, but this isn’t the case. While we are fortunate in America to have many freedoms, people in other countries are not. I’m literally in tears, once against as I write this, to think of those who are killed for their Christian beliefs or for their brave fight against the scourge of abortion.

We are all aware of the One Child Policy that is enforced in China; however, many people don't know the story of a man and wife, who have for years now stood up in defense of the men, women, and children who have been affected by China's One Child policy – which has resulted in millions of forced abortions. There are countless stories I could share with you of women who have been brutally forced to abort child after child when they become pregnant after their first child. Women in China are literally dragged out of their homes and violently held down for what we call in America a ‘simple procedure’ . . . Yet, what I have to tell you today isn't about these women who are forced to abort, but about one courageous person who stood for human rights, even when Chinese officials attacked him and his family.

About a month ago rumors began to circulate of the possible death of notorious forced abortion and sterilization opponent, Chen Guangcheng. It has yet to be confirmed, but if it is true, Chen's death would be at the hands of the Chinese officials who have kept him and his wife under house arrest for almost a year now. (Read the press release about Chen's possible death.) Chen and his wife were brutally assaulted and kept isolated with no contact to the outside world, and they were denied much needed medical care. Why did the Chinese government silence Chen? Because, Chen revealed that over 130,000 forced abortions and sterilizations took place in Linyi County in 2005 alone. This is just ONE county in all of China.

Reggie Littlejohn, President of Women's Rights Without Frontiers said the following after finding out about Chen's possible death:

"If Chen is dead, then the Chinese Communist Party is fully responsible for killing him through torture, denial of medical treatment and slow starvation. If Chen is alive, we urgently demand that he and his family be released immediately and unconditionally, for medical evaluation and treatment."

To date there has still been no news of Chen or his family; however, the Chineese people need our support. Chen is a martyr that stood up against forced abortion and sterilization, and as a result, he and his wife were brutally and repeatedly beaten, and abandoned with multiple broken bones and very serious injuries. Chen and his wife were left behind without food or medical assistance. He may be dead because of it. If the government brutally silences everyone who speaks out against the One Child Policy, families of China must be scared, and I’ve heard first hand of many families that are. You can help support the people of China by speaking out against the One Child Policy.

Chen is/was blind and always wore sunglasses. In an effort to stand in solidarity and give support to the people of China, a campaign has been launched asking supporters to take pictures wearing sunglasses and to hold up signs reading “free Chen” or some message that supports China in speaking out against the injustice of the One Child Policy. My thoughts and prayers go out to Chen, his family, and all other heroes and martyrs who have stood up against forced abortion and sterilization in China. I hope that the defense of women and children continues, because we must stand up against the injustice of China's One Child Policy. Chen is a true martyr for the unborn who has loved by his actions of helping others, despite severe, and at times, violent opposition. Are your religious freedoms or physical safety compromised by vocally supporting the unborn from a death sentence? If not, can you possibly justify quietly standing on the side lines while over one million children are slaughtered in the womb every year in the US? I challenge you to stand in solidarity with the people of China, Chen Guangcheng, and the millions of children at risk of death by abortion every day.

Women's Equality Day

Today we celebrate Women's Equality Day and commemorate the 91st anniversary of the 19th amendment made to the Constitution. This amendment gave women the right to vote in 1920. The Senate and House of Representatives designated August 26th as Women's Equality Day, and it is common that president release a proclamation.  I would like to highlight some of the statements made in President Obama's Presidential Proclamation--Women's Equality Day 2011. 

"They let their feet speak when their voices alone were not enough, protesting and marching for their fundamental right to vote in the face of heckling, jail, and abuse. Their efforts led to enormous progress millions upon millions of women have since used the power of the ballot to help shape our country." 

"On the 91st anniversary of this landmark in civil rights, we continue to uphold the foundational American principles that we are all equal, and that each of us deserves a chance to pursue our dreams. We honor the heroes who have given of themselves to advance the causes of justice, opportunity, and prosperity." 

What truly beautiful statements these are! I hope that our president means what he said in this proclamation, and that he will allow all women -- born and unborn -- to pursue their dreams. I hope that the heckling, jailing, and abuse on those who believe in protecting the innocent women in the womb ends.

I believe that the next generation will be convicted and will stand true to one of President Obama's last statement, "I call upon the people of the United States to celebrate the achievements of women and recommit ourselves to the goal of gender equality in this country." (Presidential Proclamation--Women's Equality Day 2011)

Update- Vice President Biden's Support of 1 Child Policy

Yesterday I shared with you a letter written to Vice President Biden after he conveyed his understanding to Chinese officials of their One Child Policy that forces women to have abortions.  Read my blog with the letter from Reggie Littlejohn, President of Women's Rights Without Frontiers.

Since the letter has been sent and severe public criticism has justifiably been made of Vice President Biden's support of China's One Child Policy, President Obama's administration has released a statement stating they "strongly opposes all aspects of China's coercive birth limitation policies, including forced abortion and forced sterilization."

True or false?

In a press release this morning from Women's Rights Without Frontiers the statement from President Obama's administration doesn't fly due to the constant suppor President Obama has given of China's One Child Policy. Here are some of the things that were pointed out in this morning's press release:

• Restored funding of UNFPA (Unites Nations Family Planning Fund) which is an abortion provider in China that the US stopped funding in 2001 because they were found to have been implementing the One Child Policy; yet President Obama wants to send a proposed $47 million to the UNFPA 
• US funds IPPF (International Planned Parenthood Federation) which works with Chinese population control.  On Planned Parenthood's website it says "The China Family Planning Association (CFPA) plays a very important role in China's family planning programme. It supports the present family planning policy of the government . . ."

Mr. President, do you really not support China's One Child Policy?  If so we challenge you to hold true to your administration's statement by removing all funding of UNFPA and IPPF.

Letter to Vice President Biden -- One Child Policy Understandable?

Vice President Biden on a recent visit to China conveyed his understanding for China's One Child Policy.  I encourage you now to take a look at the letter sent to Vice President Biden by China human rights advocate Reggie Littlejohn, President of Women's Rights Without Frontiers.

Dear Vice President Biden:


I write concerning the remark you made Sunday during your official visit to China: "Your policy has been one which I fully understand -- I'm not second-guessing -- of one child per family."


By your own admission, then, you "fully understand":

• That China's One Child Policy is enforced through forced abortion and involuntary sterilization;

• That, because of the traditional preference for boys, girls are disproportionately subject to abortion, abandonment and infanticide;

• That because of this gendercide, there are an estimated 37 million more males than females living in China today;

• That this severe gender imbalance is a powerful, driving force behind human trafficking and sexual slavery from nations surrounding China;

• That according to the World Health Organization, China has the highest female suicide rate of any country in the world. Approximately 500 Chinese women kill themselves each day. Could this extraordinary suicide rate be related to the trauma of enduring a forced abortion or forced sterilization?

Since you "fully understand" this, how can you then state that you do not "second-guess" this policy, which causes more violence to women and girls than any other official policy on earth? I understand that you have several children. Would you "second-guess" this policy if it were the law of the United States? Can you imagine the devastation if it were your own wife being dragged away to forcibly abort your children? Families in China endure this every day. Is such a policy acceptable so long as it does not affect U.S. families, but only Chinese families?


Or do you agree with CNN's Ted Turner, and with Norman Fleishman, the former Planned Parenthood executive, both of whom have stated that the United States should adopt the One Child Policy?


To say that you "fully understand" and yet do not "second-guess" the One Child Policy is to turn a blind eye to the incalculable suffering caused by this policy. If you disagree, please issue a statement clarifying your remarks. Otherwise, why should we not conclude that for you, forced abortion, forced sterilization, infanticide and gendercide are acceptable forms of population control?

I, too, "fully understand" the coercive enforcement of China's One Child Policy. It is an atrocity that must be abolished from the face of the earth.

Gender Pregnancy Test -- Sex selective abortion?

Oh how science continues to amaze me. Two weeks ago I saw a number of articles start to trickle through with headlines like ‘America next to Perform Sex Selective Abortions’. My first thought was “Oh brother, what now?” Then I found out about something pretty awesome! There is a safe over the counter test called Tell me Pink or Blue that is 95% accurate at detecting a baby’s gender only 7 weeks into the pregnancy. Apparently it’s been available online for a few years now, but it’s just starting to make its way into stores.

Then, I went and recalled the caption that had something to do with America and sex selective abortions . . . Supposedly scientists and the pro-abortion movement alike are looking at this as an opportunity to go back to -- the roots of the pro-abortion movement i.e. eugenics. I’m talking about Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger, who found contraception necessary “to create a race of thoroughbreds” (Birth Control Review, Nov. 1921). And, when not trying to weed out "inferior races", Margarett Sanger was attempting to rid the world of those children at risk of diseases or physical handicaps. "More children from the fit, less from the unfit -- that is the chief aim of birth control." (Margaret Sanger Birth Control Review, May 1919, p. 12)

When I took a look at the website for this new pregnancy test I found what appeared to be a more positive agenda. On the landing page of TellMePinkorBlue.com here is a list of bullet points they have in bold:

Sex Detection at 7 Weeks Post Conception

Scientific Gender Test Based on Fetal DNA

Clinically Proven 95% Accurate*

Do-At-Home, Safe, Non-invasive

Prepare for Child Rearing Early

Begin Building Family Bonds

Sex selection vs further sentimental attachment?

In an article titled Blood Test Detects Baby's Sex At 7 Weeks from the Huffington Post by Lindsey Tanner:

“The authors say the results suggest blood tests like those studied could be a breakthrough for women at risk of having babies with certain diseases, who could avoid invasive procedures if they learned their fetus was a gender not affected by those illnesses. But, the study also raises concerns about couples using such tests for gender selection and abortion.”

So what do you think? Will this test be used to perpetuate the excitement of pregnancy and create stronger bonds between parents and child earlier on, or will it open new doors to sex selective abortion and, as Margaret Sanger might put it, weed out the less fit?
